Storytelling is an ancient art form, and has helped us to understand our world and our lives, and envision different realities. Science fiction has, historically, not only predicted some aspects of the future, but also shaped it. Now, as we find ourselves in dark times, instead of envisioning dystopian futures, let’s envision something different.
This anthology of science fiction will be designed to help us envision peaceful, environmentally sustainable, and equitable futures for North America (and the world). These stories should spark our imaginations about a better, sustainable future. They might be environmentally focused, focused on space exploration, and/or set in near-future urban landscapes. These are not meant to be utopian: what’s most important about these stories is that they will give us clues and visions, some small, some large, about how we get there from here. The progress may well not be complete.
We will center marginalized voices, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, migrants, disabled folks, and others. We want to hear about adventurers, healers, scientists, artists, shamans, spacers, teachers, politicians, and all of the individuals and communities you can imagine, who are working and building, or have built, a better tomorrow.
We’re looking for stories of 1,000 - 6,000 words. We’ll pay $50 per story, plus a copy of the final book. Simultaneous submissions are fine, just let us know if you need to withdraw your story as soon as possible. Previous published stories are also fine, just make sure to let us know you have permission to reprint.
DO NOT SUBMIT AI-GENERATED STORIES. We will use AI detection and may shame authors who submit obvious AI-generated stories via social media. We are serious.
Deadline for submission is May 31th, 2025. We’ll let you know if you are on the shortlist within two weeks of your submission.
